Jharkhand's journey in sanitation encapsulated in a nutshell shows the state's progress through the levers of policy, community and technical progress.
Maharashtra’s transformative approach to faecal sludge and septage management has firmly established it as a leader in sanitation excellence. Consistently being in the top three positions and topping the Swachh Survekshan rankings in 2023, the state has demonstrated its commitment to innovative and comprehensive solutions. Initiatives like the holistic two-pronged strategy; streamlining administrative processes via a single-window approach and introducing innovations like scheduled desludging with private sector engagement, and sanitation taxation have contributed to Maharashtra’s sanitation success.
Odisha has enabled the inclusion of vulnerable groups across the sanitation value chain by engaging women and transgender SHGs as service providers. The state has led by example in SHG engagement by ensuring that challenges are addressed at both SHG and ULB level, roles and expectations are clarified on both ends through equitable service contracts that protect SHG interests.
Bundu, a small town in Jharkhand, has emerged as one of the leading Urban Local Bodies to champion decentralised sanitation solutions. It sets a strong example of delivering safe and inclusive sanitation by leveraging the twin pillars of infrastructural development and citizen engagement.
